Released April 1 2003, Nike described the Air Zoom UltraFlight as “The future of lightweight, supportive, ultra responsive basketball footwear” and the shoe itself was designed for players lookin for the ultimate in lightweight performance. Indeed if you’ve ever put the $125.00 (original MSRP) UltraFlight on feet they were light but for me personally never gave that locked down secure fit I always looked for in my basketball shoe. Moving on, this was a shoe worn by the likes of Gary Payton and Steve Nash -two of the fastest players in the NBA at the time- and a shoe that was seen often on street ball courts around the US. Features included a combination synthetic and full grain leather that felt quality, injected thermo formed heel, lateral stability support shell, internalized speed lacing system, internalized Phylon midsole, full length Zoom Air unit sockliner and a solid rubber outsole with enhanced grippy herringbone traction pattern. In all they never quite achieved the cult status of the Hyper Flight nor did I find them as comfy as the Nike Air Zoom Flight Turbine but they performed well, were lightweight and looked good on court leaving us with an early 2000’s classic. They also came in sizes 6-18 and wearable pairs can be found today at a rather affordable price.
