Sega, Sonic The HedgeHog & PUMA Team Up For A Special 2018 Drop

By now you’ve probably heard the news, but if you haven’t well then its official; Sonic, Sega & PUMA are teaming up for a special 2018 drop. This collaboration brings the best of both worlds together with the pairing of SEGA’s iconic Sonic the Hedgehog

and an all-new RS-0 sneaker. Coming during a time where retro gaming seems to “peak” every year.

On the SEGA end it underlines their continued efforts to align key franchises within the SEGA portfolio with high-end and highly visible brands from the worlds of fashion, lifestyle and art.

Jason Rice, Director of Brand Licensing, SEGA Europe says, “This latest partnership with PUMA affords us the opportunity to move the Sonic franchise into the realm of highly exclusive sport lifestyle footwear and expose the brand to all new audiences.”

Adam Petrick, Director for Brand & Marketing at PUMA adds, “We’re excited to be able to partner with such a fun and innovative brand with a longstanding history in popular culture. We are one with SEGA in always pushing the boundaries forward and are very proud of the fantastic result of this collaboration.”

No denying Sonic’s permanent place in pop culture or for my personal love of the character.

For me the obsession began in 1991 seeing the legendary commercials

and experiencing the local  “Summer Of Sega” challenge on a boardwalk at Jones Beach, NY.  I didn’t have a Genesis back during its initial drop (had an SNES) but once prices had hit rock bottom and I had a job it was off to pick up the legendary first gen Genesis with “High Definition Graphics” adorning this beautiful machine and complete retail copies of Sonic 1,2 & 3 (for which Michael Jackson composed the music for!). From there of course came more games, cartoons and a host of other products.

Personal memories aside, for all of us in the world of both sneakers, gaming and fashion it provides for a refreshing offering.  Keep in mind this isn’t the first time Sonic has made his way to a shoe (Sonic had his own kids shoe back in 1991) but its sure to be one of the better drops.  More details around the PUMA x SEGA RS-0 SONIC is set to be revealed over the coming weeks.
